In situ. Sporocarp has broken open, releasing spores.
Sterile base composed of columns, filaments, threads and patchworks of mycelium, supporting the sporocarp above. By the time mature spores are being produced, the peridium is also drying out, and color changes in the peridium don’t occur.
Gleba has cracked open, exposing spores to the air. Peridium with minute, flattened scales.
Base composed of columns, threads, and sheets of mycelium.
Notice some red-staining of peridium opposite thumb nail.

Has a very interesting sterile base.

I collected this specimen and brought it home with me. Base is honeycombed, about 3 inches long. Will post photos tomorrow.
