thanks for taking the time to do a crush mount! Out of curiosity, which literature are you working from? The reported spore size range in Smith & Hesler’s books is a bit smaller than what you are finding here. G. picreus is one of the few descriptions from The North American Species of Gymnopilus that is well supported with examined materials. I am wondering if your measurements are off? This certainly looks like picreus otherwise!

Yes, we do have the specimen.
Ignorant votes? Whose votes are ignorant? Some of them indeed are!
You mentioned stains. We did not use any, except the NH4OH as a wetting agent for the dry material. It is known that the spores darken (ferruginous) in alkali.
The spores measurements (average of 10-15 spores) were done in water. The spores size are within the sizes cited by the literature.

some may be slightly “ventricose,” but not nearly enough for G. picreus.
a squash mount may help…but, imo all those mounts do is alter the cell…
a stain would just obscure the color…
h20 is the best bet when trying to judge color.

The cystidia

Several are ventricose. The thin cylindrical cystidia look to be half obscured, can we be sure they are not abruptly ventricose as well?

I wouldn’t really expect to make out cystidia cell contents without stain, would you?

the spore measurements are much too large for G. picreus.
also, the cheilocystidia should be ventricose and sometimes with a brown pigment.
they might be Galerina…
