Recognized by sight: When fresh, it had a yellow-brown cap (darker near the center and more white towards the edges). It also had white gills and the long tap root associated with C. umbonata. Also, it was growing as a solitary mushroom.
Used references: Features of the specimen matched those in “Mushroom’s Demystified,” especially that of the long tap root-like stalk that was buried about 5 cm into the ground for my specimen.
