The leaves that this was growing on is a citrus leaf, Citrus sinensis. As for it being Aschersonia, I am also in doubt. But I have sent some specimens to our pathologist in USDA, and that’s the response I received. But I am still skeptical.

do these leaves belong to either a citrus tree, Ficus nitida or a Gardenia sp.? If not, this ID may be in doubt. The paper you cite specifies these three species as the requisite habitats for the whitefly on which this fungus forms. My general suspicion is that a genus determination of Aschersonia — much less a species within Aschersonia — requires microscopy, and cannot be accomplished simply by naked eye observation.
