and, before the second photo was added, what the underside looked like. I don’t know any genus other than Boletinellus/Gyrodon which fits this collection. Other than meruloiides, Big NA Bolete Book lists only a few species which occur well outside the geographic range of this obs.
Maybe the unusual color and unusually shallow tubes are due to abnormal development? Were there leaves covering them? Unusual change in weather?
I’m used to seeing merulioides with brownish leathery cap surface. Mushroom Expert has one photo of gray-capped merulioides.
