Two strains of Sordaria were grown on agar in the same petri dish. The hyphae fused and mated, one with tan spores and a wild strain with dark spores. Crossing over during metaphase I of meiosis resulted in visible evidence because of the spore pattern within each ascus. 4 & 4 is normal with no crossing over. 2,4,2 or 2,2,2,2 shows crossing over has occurred. One is 2,1,1,1,1,2.
