Recognized by sight: The colour and shape are really distinctive. About the only other Xylaria it could be is X. enterogena, but those are smaller, though they intergrade with telfairii. No chance you sectioned it? Should be hollow, or goopie at least inside.

Collections from Ecuador or separating more with X. enterogena ITS sequences than X. telfairii. Dennis treats X. enterogena as a synonym of X. telfairii:

I’m not sure these are actually two distinct species although ITS sequences would suggest they are.
