Recognized by sight: The red exudates are a pretty sure field marker for this fungi! No other Xylaria have exudates that are quite that colour.

I.F. lists Diderma globosum Pers. as the Basionym, which really just means that Persoon confused the two fungi, and than later Montagne sorted it out. The type of X. globosa is probably mostly young, white material. I’ve never seen it, though.

Prefers the name Diderma globosum Pers. But looking at photos they do not look even close.
