On some rocks (limestone?) in an upland forest. I am referring to the yellow lichen. Difficult to get a better resolution with my camera. Found most of the lichen on one rock, though photos represent two different boulders along a trail through mixed forest.

Recognized by sight: This species will form a big yellow stain like this long before it starts to produce apothecia — which are nonetheless (barely) visible in a few cases. Chrysothrix will never form well-defined rosettes like this, and will be yellower and clearly granular. Also note the faint whitish prothallus around each rosette.
