I have observed this as well. Age of the fruitings of this and various other species can produce varying oxidation reactions.

Blue/gray bruising on the pores…

of Boletus pallidus seems to be variable, ranging from nil to prominent. I think it may be related to the developmental stages of the mushroom. Here’s an obs I posted where two collections of B. pallidus show the extremes of this range.

The ones in this obs (161332) look like pallidus to me.

Scratched Pores

I didn’t scratch the pores but I handled them a lot. Is my original guess way out in left field? Im looking at pictures of Boletus Pallidus and that is just not what I had. The color and overall look is just different. These were very plain, boring looking grey boletes. I would have fried them in butter, but really it seemed like a waste of butter. They were just very grey and bland looking.

On second thought

Boletus pallidus is a possibility. It is the pores that bruise strongly. Did you scratch the pores?

No staining

on the pores pretty much rules out Boletus pallidus. It lacks the prominent reticulation of Retiboletus. Your mushroom is pretty nondescript. Hopefully someone will recognize it.

This was from last year and I didn’t keep any, but I do remember that there was no staining. Field guide says that Boletus pallidus stains blue. What say you guys????
