with Agaricus, you’ll want to injure the stipe.
either scratch it with your fingernail or cut it length-wise even.
some species will produce a color change and some will not.
also, KOH can come in handy when identifying Agaricus.

next time, you might want to pull the entire fruit body to show the ring and stipe base.
these features are also very important when trying to identify species in this genus.

After just smelling the mushroom again, I immediately noticed a cool sensation to the aroma, similar to when you smell alcohol or menthol. I’m guessing this is the phenol component. Aside from that, the aroma is very earthy/ soil.

I seem to have a hard time determining if mushroom bruises. Either none of the mushrooms I find bruise, or I’m not testing hard enough/ correctly. But I vaguely remember this stipe/stem having a greenish yellow hue near the base when I picked it.
I don’t know what phenol smells like.

for Agaricus xanthodermus is unpleasant and phenolic.
the stipe should bruise yellow then turn brown…

This does not smell anywhere near almond or sweet. However, it’s a day old and perhaps the smell has changed. Odor is not pleasant…
