Old Carbon Balls?

The consistently cushiony shape and bumpy surface look more like a Daldinia species to me. Those I find in Western North Carolina blacken with age and are often surrounded by a sooty deposit. The tale would be told by sectioning one of the lumps vertically. If you see alternating black and white rings inside, it’s a Daldinia.

But I’m also happy to be educated if you know something I don’t.
