I am not proposing a new name for this, but I believe it to be Phallus rubicundus and not Mutinus. If you have Kuo’s Midwest book you will be able to see the difference between the two species. Otherwise, check out his web site. The same information is there. I have seen P. rubicundus a number of times in the St. Louis area – even in mulch in my yard. It has become fairly common here. Your last photo shows quite well there is a separate “head” which bears the spore mass and the potholes. I probably have misidentified this myself in the past.
