the habitat is wrong, and possibly the stature. Patrick, have you considered other Coprinaceae?

Hollow of a tree in the bottoms

They were in a hollow in a tree in Meramec river bottoms.

The only qualification is they weren’t as large as some shaggy manes I’ve seen (these only 2 or 3 inches), but didn’t look like magpie inky or anything else like that. Definitely scaly, and not brownish like mica caps, or silvery like alcohol inkies.
