Observation 167101: Gymnomyces abietis (Trappe and Castellano)

Notes: Gymnomyces, found in grove of Noble fir at entrance to parking lot. Animal had already predated on. Found underground about 1 inch. Peridium orange, spherical, somewhat knobby. Odor: mostly of soil, but subtly sharp and acidic.

Used references: NATS Field Guide To Selected North American Truffles and Truffle-like Fungi, by Trappe, Evans and Trappe. Reported from Aug-Dec in montane habitat. This was found at 3900’, and the only possible host (trunk 2 feet away) was Noble fir, within a Noble fir copse. No other tree species present at this site.
