Observation 168635: Umbilicaria mammulata (Ach.) Tuck.

When: 2014-06-28

Collection location: Pembroke, Maine, USA [Click for map]

Who: Terri Clements/Donna Fulton (pinonbistro)

No specimen available

Foliose lichen on rock, likely granite. Thallus attached to rock from one point. Smooth brown upper surface. Scurfy looking lower surface as a result of black rhizines.

I tried KOH 5% on the upper surface and got a yellowish green turning greenish black reaction but could find no mention of macro chemical reactions in the online resources.

The last photo (image 430182) for example is Lasallia. Note the dimples, paler “dustier” coloration, etc.
