Observation 168960: Fomitopsis pini-canadensis
When: 2014-07-03
Collection location: Perry, Maine, USA [Click for map]
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Specimens in various stages of growth on same tree which was blown down recently by high winds.

From the 2013 paper referenced below: “Our phylogenetic results suggest that Fomitopsis pinicola sensu lato is a species complex comprised of four well-supported phylogenetic species, three in North America and one in Europe.”

If I understand it correctly F. pinicola is a European species, F. ponderosa a SW American species and there are two species of the F. pinicola group which occur from Alaska to Maine: F. pini-canadensis (typical red belt) and F. ochracea.
