Yes, I have checked our newest book, Ascomycetes of North America, by Beug. According to it, this is H. atra. It exists worldwide. Thanks for your comment.

Now I know that I have seen Helvella genus here, did not know what it was until seeing these observations, it is gone now, not black but very dark brown bordering on black, might still be some growing around my burn pile out back (they ring around the burn pile ), I’ll check. Very persistent, some remained fleshy and intact for two weeks.
