I used the OMAX 40X-2000X Lab Binocular Biological Compound Microscope with a DSLR adapter, along with significant digital enhancement to better show detail. The hyphae were stained with congo red. I managed to get oblique lighting on the hyphae shot by resting the hole in the center of a razor blade directly on the illuminator and playing with the condenser and diaphragm. It really cuts down the light and I had to take a very long exposure, but I really like the effect and will probably continue to use it.

Nice!

Scope and gear used? Are the hyphae stained in phloxine?

Thanks Fredo

I found this in an area dominated by sugar maple but there are also hemlocks. I believe it was on hardwood.

Very likely in the Pluteus salicinus group.

What kind of wood was this growing on? conifer or hardwood?

Thanks Richard

What about the pileipellis should I be looking at? I don’t think I found any clamp connections, but I definitely don’t feel confident saying they aren’t there.
