Observation 169574: Amanita praecox Y. Lamoureux nom. prov.

When: 2014-07-11

Collection location: Hickory Run State Park, Pennsylvania, USA [Click for map]

Who: Dave W (Dave W)

Specimen available

At first I thought these may be examples of Amanita sp-S01. But the spores are broadly ellipsoid to subglobose.

Maybe praecox? This type seems to be a summer species.

The area where I collected these is a grove of mature conifers, spruce and some hemlock. This 3-5 acre plot annually produces a seeming array of yellowish section Amanita mushrooms (with variably fleeting annulus) which are often intermingled. Names I have applied to collections include praecox, crenulata, and S01. Spore shapes vary from broadly ellipsoid to globose.

I think your move based on spore-shape is a good one.

Very best,
