Observation 170744: Tylopilus variobrunneus Roody, A.R. Bessette & Bessette

When: 2012-07-23

Collection location: Buncombe Co., North Carolina, USA [Click for map]

Who: Mike Hopping (AvlMike)

No specimen available

These are noticeably harder and heavier than the local bitter species of Tylopilus. Flesh is white, gradually pinkening on exposure. Little to no internal bug damage. Taste mild. Standard references report that edibility is unknown. I’ve found it a choice edible, comparable in texture and nutty flavor to T. alboater and T. badiceps.
