Notes: I found these “puff balls” lying in duff under mixed conifers. There is no evidence of them being attached to mycelium.

This mycorrhizal puffball

is often found near true firs at higher elevation. I have found specimens with the outer rind predated upon by small mammals. Also known by Handkea fumosa.
