Site was logged and subsequently a fire burned through
Open non-treed area (grassy/ weedy/ shrubby)
Growing on birch (Betula neoalaskana), the tall dead snags but live regen is coming up from the base

Daldinia is diverse

Your suggestion of Daldinia sp. made me question my confidence with my initial ID… rightly so, it seems. According to a recent publication on the genus, D. concentrica is European and so American specimens under this name should be re-examined. In terms of groups, I got as far as “Daldinia vernicosa – Daldinia loculata group” or “Daldinia petriniae group” based on geography and habitat. In the former there were interesting notes re: Betula hosts and fire damage, which is very relevant here.
