Observation 171464: Hymenopellis furfuracea (Peck) R.H. Petersen

When: 2014-07-18

Collection location: Blakeslee, Pennsylvania, USA [Click for map]

Who: Phil Yeager (gunchky)

No specimen available

Notes:
Found in mixed woods; mainly Hemlock, Yellow Birch, Maple and a few Oaks. Growing on moss near a well decayed log. I started to dig it out and i just pulled on it slightly and it came out easily without breaking. The substrate was extremely soft. Unfortunatly I din’t get a spore print to be able to distinguish between this and X. megalospora.

Question. Am I to understand that even though H. furfuracea is a synonym for Xerula furfuracea, the former must be used to ID this species. Thanks. Phil
