Observation 172563: Helvella lacunosa Afzel.

No herbarium specimen

Notes: Mixed hardwood-conifer forest but w/ mostly hardwoods nearby: oaks, birch, aspen, some maple seedlings. Not sure if H. lacunosa or H. sulcata but some references mention that H. sulcata is not an accepted name.

Recognized by sight: The stipe seems have lacunae but the pileus would seem to be more similar to H. sulcata. Also, not sure how much habitat plays into this but the fruiting body was located next a well decayed birch trunk in an upland mixed hardwood-conifer forest.
