On well rotted wood in mixed woods—balsam fir, oak and maple nearby. Pale brown velvety cap, 2.5 cm., paler tattered margin; brownish gills; stem color of cap, whitish flecks at apex.

I think you may be right. The cap shape and color of the gills had me baffled.
