Observation 174394: Cantharellus lateritius (Berk.) Singer
When: 2014-07-29
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Although I found other smooth chanterelles on this day, this one was distinctive because of a bright orange coating surrounding the whole mushroom. The mushroom was also thicker and denser than the others. At first I thought it might be a lobster mushroom, but it did seem superficially more like a chanterelle than one of those that the lobster mushroom usually parasitizes. I wonder if this is one of the parasitizing mushrooms related to the lobster that attacks a chanterelle.
