No herbarium specimen

Notes: Very hard. Has a stem, growing out of the base of the stump. Did not taste, but the smell is a strong mushroom odor, possibly bitter.

Recognized by sight: Morphology fits with tsugae, looks to be some pine needles strewn about, tree might be pine, though I am not so good with identifying trees from bark.

in the area, but this is just a stump. (Still working on tree ID myself. I am going through the book Bark: A Field Guide to Trees of the Northeast by Michael Wojtech, but have not used it for mushrooming yet.)
