Observation 174892: Spongipellis pachyodon (Pers.) Kotl. & Pouzar

When: 2014-08-22

Collection location: Illinois, USA [Click for map]

Who: Stiggy (Stiggy)

No specimen available

Climate Zone 5. Growing on an Oak log in my wood pile. It seems like some kind of Hericium because of the color and the sort of hanging spore producing gills. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Hericium that had a smoothish caplike top. That’s not something Hericium is supposed to have, so its probably something else.
