Growing on very old log – Douglas fir forest. About 10-15CM, by 10-15CM, by 10-15CM – in other words almost round. Hard outer surface almost like a turtle shell. No distinct smell.

Recognized by sight: Fomes doesn’t generally grow on conifer. Fomes will produce exudate on occasion but it is sparse and dark in color.
