Observation 175837: Phallus Junius ex L.

When: 2014-08-31

Collection location: 12.5 miles south of Lake City, Florida, USA [Click for map]

Who: john green (jgreen7801)

No specimen available

It is growing in a cluster of several clusters of what look like puff balls but this one erupted this long tube 7 or 8 inches long with a greenish slime coating on the last 2.5 inches. The substrate is a layer of weathered red mulch from Home Despot with a layer on top mixed of the red mulch and oak, cherry, blueberry, and tupelo leaves. I should also mention the mushrooms are growing under a birdbath which would mean copious amounts of bird droppings in the substrate. This area of FL is quite rainy and we have a multitude of different species and colors of mushrooms. This is a new endeavor for me, so be kind. Heavy fungus smell especially when disturbed. Guess that’s where the Stinkhorn comes in.
