Observation 177116: Boletus edulis var. grandedulis Arora & Simonini
When: 2014-09-05
2700m
No herbarium specimen
0 Sequences

Notes:
This is the weirdest thing we have ever seen while foraging for fungi EVER!
Upon heading to one of our known B. edulis spots along the stream we were shocked to find this perfectly compact, dense and fresh King bolete sitting in moving water on a small boulder. What were they thinking!!! Made for a pretty interesting image with the moving water surrounding this perfect porcini though…

To top it off- we didn’t find any of our usual porcini bounty up stream. Either the folks before us had an amazing harvest and were willing to throw a perfect 2lb. king away or they had no clue what they had found in the first place. Specimen was too pristine and well placed to have been handled by any animal.

Slight reddish tinge to cap margin and pore structure(in addition to size) implies B. edulis var. grand edulis.

Elevation: 2700ft.

Temp: low 80’s.
