Recognized by sight: Cap with white growing margin, grayish to tan center. Spines grayish with white tips. Flesh black core, with brown outer duplex, outer duplex on stipe very soft, expanding and holding a lot of water. Odor sweet. Growing under Red Oak, American Beech and Eastern Hemlock.
