Recognized by sight: Astraeus does not have a delineated fibrillose peristome; its endoperidium produces a torn aperture. The well defined fibrillose peristome, the calcium oxalate crystals adorning the endoperidium, and the presence of a mycelial layer (note how debris is collected beneath the rays), are all characters associated with G. minimum.
