Notes: on sheltered side at base of big old leaning Quercus montana

old open oak-maple forest on west-sloping side-ridge

thin scurfy white thallus, algae green coccoid (but beware yellow scratch-test!), apothecia irregular convex black initially immersed and covered with white thallus bits at first and appearing pruinose, epihymenium red-brown hymenium red-brown I+ vivid red-brown K/I+ blue to greenish, asci huge balloons easily seen in dissecting scope I- K/I- inside, spores ~4 per ascus muriform oblong hyaline textured-looking in water but clearing in I or K or K/I ~10 transverse septae and several longitudinal septae brickwork-like except at tips one half maybe slightly larger than the other half ~35-40×15-18um
