I need to read better… Definitely could still be U. subscabrosa, but there are additional options in the Smokies, and I don’t have my literature with me.

Lack of red pigments and apothecia, growing on trees, narrows it down to just U. subscabrosa, U.dasaea, U.entoviolata. The last two are rare in your area, leaving U. subscabrosa. Harris & Ladd call it uncommon,but I thought it was fairly common, and besides it looks just like this. It was my first guess; process of elimination only serves to confirm it.
