F. fomentarius is a European species. It is not known to occur in north America. Fomes excavatus is a north american sister species. It would be rare to find it on fir. Fomitopsis pini-canadensis is known to have a yellow pore surface and prefers conifer as a host. This, along with the clear exudate, and a thick growing margin, strongly points towards the later genus.
