Observation 180552: Agaricus subrufescens Peck

When: 2014-09-27

Collection location: Jasper Co., Missouri, USA [Click for map]

Who: Jon Shaffer (watchcat)

Specimen available

Growing in top soil pile from a landscaping job with grass.

5% KOH mildly yellow on cap and cut context.

Floccose stipe bruises yellow as seen in the group photo. Naturally split cap also has a yellow stain. Bruise turns brown with time. Brown/ochre color pileus with hints of red and one having a black center. Skirt like annulus shows a nice bumpy pattern.

Very mild cherry smell until dried when a fantastic cherry, burnt sugar smell emerges.

Mild but slightly astringent flavor raw.
Cooked and ate small amount next day finally noticing an almondy smell and flavor although cherry or sugar cookies seems closer, in my experience.
