Observation 180737: Amanita porphyria Alb. & Schwein.
When: 2014-09-28

Notes: Found in sandy “barrens” area of far northwest corner of Wisconsin (Bayfield Co.); habitat is dominated by jack pine and black oak. This mushroom is reminiscent of Amanita citrina (another member of section Validae) but the colors are way off. Brownish mushroom pileus with gray ashy velar material on top of cap; beautiful gray annulus; marginate bulb at base of stipe. I have seen this species many times in the East but never in Wisconsin.
