Observation 181675: Hydnum repandum var. rufescens (Pers.) Barla
When: 2014-10-03
Collection location: Pownal, Maine, USA [Click for map]
No herbarium specimen

Notes: On ground in mixed woods—predominantly beech, oak and maple. I can’t decide whether or not the spines are decurrent—the definitive trait I think for separating H. repandum (decurrent spines) from H. repandum var. rufescens (free spines). They are not clearly decurrent I think and that fact plus the rather high coloration of the cap and spines may argue for the latter. See Irene’s comments on obs 120795.
