Observation 182224: Volvariella Speg.
When: 2014-01-26
No herbarium specimen

Notes: At the end of a day of collecting, Roki lead us to a home near where we’d parked, where the owners were curious if the large mushrooms in their enormous pile of corn waste were good to eat. Though they are undoubtedly Volvariella (probably V. volvacea), we were reluctant to make blanket edibility statements in an area whose fungi are so minimally known.

Substrate: prolific throughout a 3m tall mound of Zea mays waste

Habitat: humid rainforest, ~800-900m

Ecoregion: Madagascar Lowland Forests (AT0117) WWF | WKP

Collectors: D. Newman, J. Shay, E. Randrianjohany, R. Letsara, V. Razafindrahaja
