Notice that the stipe doesn’t really have a bulb. The apparent bulb is really a very thick volval sac. The typical brownish staining inner layer of the volva is left in thin patches (sometimes like a layer of cracked paint) on the cap. The flocculence on the stem will stain in the same manner as does the volva on the cap.
