Herbert, thanks.

I would like to think that anyone lurking in the MO comments would know the dangers (and benefits) of wild foraging.. and of snarky comments.

I apologize in advance if someone went out and ate a few of these after reading my looks delicious comment, or you may wish to thank me. All a matter of perspective I guess.

I may be one of the freshest noobs here, thanks for looking out for us Deb ;).

thank you AJ!!!

the point being … it’s a delicious gateway to somewhere you might not want to go.

there’s a lot of folks here who are not well familiar with fungi and esp. EATING any amanita. I lean waaaaaaaaaaaay on the side of caution for a general audience like this.

how many folks on MO now? 8,000? How many noobs, d’ya think?

I ate it once unboiled and loved it, but had only a single slice. No reaction, good bad or ugly, other than excellent flavor. But I certainly wouldn’t have eaten a platter full, and I still don’t recommend it broadly. I am in good company. It is not a broadly accepted edible anywhere nor at any place nor at any time. There are pockets of muscaria munchers tho, and more power to ’em, as long as they go in with all of the facts.

Mostly it’s just used as “extreme cuisine” here in NA.

We all pick our poisons. And I know all about its medicinal use. That is not what is being discussed here.

But it is certainly a never-ending topic of fascination and controversy!

They do taste great, but the physiological effects are unpleasant in my estimation; dangerous in others’.

“…I can attest to their good flavor from first hand experience” – D. Viess

They sure are photogenic mushrooms, but this photo is particularly exceptional. Great stuff!
