Pretty much all my photos that I’ve sure of (clearly rugose and/or dark-colored thallus) have no pruina. So maybe we should emend the description from “sometimes pruinose” to “rarely pruinose” or “mostly epruinose”. (I see a tiny bit of pruina on a few apothecia of one of my specimens.)

(The rest of my photos which I’m uncertain of I’ve officially placed into limbo between aipolia and phaea thanks to this conversation thread! :)

I just went back and looked at all of my P.phaea photos.

I have quite a few, for this lichen likes posing, forming perfect shapes and beautiful patterns. I didn’t find any with pruinose apothecia. So this here must be another saxicolous P.aipolia. I will go ahead and rename it.

Wow, tricky

Compare the descriptions here:

P. aipolia at CNALH
P. phaea at CNALH

There aren’t many differences:

P. aipolia — not rugose; rarely brown; often pruinose; thallus, lobes and spores all larger
P. phaea — rugose; often brownish; sometimes pruinose; thallus, lobes and spores all smaller

Not much to go on. But yours looks completely non-rugose… maybe more aipolia??

Physcia phaea or ???

Now that Esslinger called one of my observations Physcia aipolia (observation 98671) where defining characteristic is pruinose apothecia, I don’t know what to call this since some young apothecia are pruinose as can be seen in the photos. :-(((
