Spore color

is usually much brighter in Gymnopilus and I think is fairly reliable.
The bright orange color of the rather smooth cap and yellowish gills in combination are unlike most Pholiota in our area.

I have a hard time calling these Gymnopilus

There’s no ring or ring zone. Spore color looks right, but my understanding is that spore color isn’t a really good way to separate Gymnopilus from Pholiota. Wish I would have taken more photos, but this is a very common mushroom that fruits pretty abundantly this time of year, and I collected it only half-heartedly.
