Mind sharing how you are able to tell that this is P. arhizus and not one of the other European species?

What are you suggesting? That we wait to change names on MO observations until others sort out this mess better? I personally suggest changing the names sooner because otherwise we are just spreading misinformation to those that are not capable or willing of investigating this issue more.

You’re right, I missed that you kindly recorded the host information, that means this could be P. arrhizus, I have downgraded my vote to “Doubtful”, doubtful that its a good name for this observation with the currently available information. Since you have a specimen perhaps we can sort this one out sooner if we find someone to sequence it?

Concerning the paper, I hypothesize that its not comprehensive yet, it would be interesting to see if any other species turn up in Europe with far more sampling and obviously not all the European countries are represented in that paper including Serbia. There are also several more specific papers that have been published since.

According to the mentioned study, within the morphological species Pisolithus arhizus, there are several phylogenetic species. To this day, those phylogenetic species are not (morphologically) described. So I don’t see the point of limiting it to the level of genus. Moreover, the mentioned study finds two phylogenetic species in association with oaks, species 4 (undescribed) and 6 (labeled as Pisolithus arhizus). Current morphological species Pisolithus arhizus includes all phylogenetic species from Europe in association with oak.
