Observation 188227: Pholiota (Fr.) P. Kumm.

No herbarium specimen

Notes: Fruiting abundantly at the base of a cottonwood tree. Looking very much like a scaly, dry Hypholoma capnoides at first glance. Odor: pleasant, somewhat like a shiitake.

Elevation: 1500ft.

Temp: low 40’s.

Proposed Names

Recognized by sight: Could be a small, thin flush of H. populnea. There were multiple fruitings of the destructive Pholiota everywhere here today on cottonwoods.
