Observation 188940: Pluteus petasatus (Fr.) Gillet
When: 2014-09-18
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Pink Spored – See photo of slide with the spore print for color. Darker orange-pinkish-reddish brown – Salmon color.

Spore sizes – 4-5 micron X 5-7 micron. (Estimated) Size varied. Shape varied, some oblong, some rounder. Bumpy, irregular. Great variation in spore appearance.

Stalk is center, growing from the heart of a decaying stump. Stump is probably hardwood but I could not be sure. Stalk snapped cleanly when I bent it, break appeared slightly wet. No other milk or oozing when I broke the cap.

The gills are crowded, see photos. Gills are detached from the stem. It was easy to pull a strip of the cap top from the edge to the top. Pulled off cleanly. Cap flesh was white. Soft, did not break brittlely. Top of cap has some dark scales. see photo.

Smell, insignificant. used ID Key in Mushroom Expert to ID
