These stand-alone sandstone formations called “buttes” tend to be covered by Pleopsidium

This one has too much graffiti, unfortunately – some of it right over Pleopsidium, since the butt-wads find smooth yellow background appealing for their wicked art. Fortunately, the lichen tends to favor vertical cliff surfaces, unreachable to humans (except to determined photographer), thus sparing some of the beauty from spoiling.
