Observation 19070: Parmotrema xanthinum (Müll. Arg.) Hale

35°13’21.51"N, 85°57’3.86"W, el. 572 m, Rutledge Point Trail.
35°13’49.26"N, 85°57’47.14"W, el. 575 m, Dotson Point Trail

Substrate: Growing on exposed sandstone rocks at the rim of the escarpment.

Habitat: oak-dominated, eastern deciduous woodland at the rim of the western escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau.

Characterization: ruffle lichen with
(1) pale yellowish green thallus (usnic acid)
(2) surface and margins of lobes with prominent and abundant cylindrical isidia (in the 10x lens, suggesting multi-stalk-eyed crabs)
(3) undersurface black with broad, brown, naked area near the margins

Identification: Parmotrema madagascariaceum is similar, and has a similar range, but its medulla is C+ pink (Brodo, et al., 2001, p.502).

There is Pyxine sorediata lurking in this observation. photo 38126 and photo 38127 (4th and 5th) do not belong in this observation. Oops! How did we miss that earlier?? :)
